- Court to hear injunction on April 2, 2025, over Torkonoo's removal
- Torkonoo asks for petition copies
- Assafuah seeks clarification on removing a Chief Justice
The Supreme Court has set April 2, 2025, to hear an injunction application brought by Vincent Assafuah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Old Tafo.
The case questions the procedural legality of President John Mahama’s actions concerning the possible removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, following the receipt of three petitions.
In the meantime, Chief Justice Torkonoo has sent a letter to the President, with copies forwarded to other relevant parties, requesting access to the three petitions calling for her removal.
On Tuesday, the presidency confirmed that President Mahama is consulting with the Council of State regarding the petitions received about the Chief Justice’s removal.
Assafuah, invoking the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction under Article 2(1)(b) of the Constitution, is seeking various declarations to clarify the correct interpretation of the constitutional provisions related to the removal of a Chief Justice.
