Veteran Nollywood actor Hanks Anuku has shared his struggles within the Nigerian movie industry, highlighting blackmail and jealousy from colleagues as major obstacles in his career.
During an interview on the Nollywood Hardcore podcast with host Emma Labista, Anuku revealed that some industry figures were envious of his success and resorted to malicious tactics to ruin his reputation.
He explained that certain individuals used photos from movie sets to spread false rumors about his mental health, which negatively impacted his career and reduced job opportunities.
This blackmail had a lasting effect on his career, setting him back for several years.
Feeling frustrated by the situation, Anuku eventually moved to Ghana, where he worked in the creative arts sector under President Akufo-Addo’s administration after supporting the president’s campaign.
Anuku also expressed criticism towards the Nigerian film industry, citing its lack of openness and growth. He accused many actors and filmmakers of refusing to embrace versatility, which he believes stifled creativity and hindered the industry’s development.
Despite these challenges, Anuku remains a celebrated icon in Nollywood, with fans continuing to appreciate his contributions to the industry.
