Energy Minister Uncovers Missing ECG Containers Worth Millions

Story Highlights
  • 2,500 containers found, not 3,000 as reported
  • Over 1,300 containers unaccounted for
  • Jinapor announced a criminal investigation

John Jinapor, the Minister for Energy, has revealed that the previous government reported about 3,000 Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers being held at the Tema Port during the transition of power.

However, upon visiting the port after assuming office, he was informed that only 2,500 containers were present, and these had accumulated a demurrage cost of GHS 1,500,000,000.

In a Facebook post, the Minister addressed criticisms surrounding the discovery of 1,350 missing ECG containers at the port.

“Let me clarify the situation. During the transition, the outgoing NPP government indicated that around 3,000 ECG containers were at Tema Harbour, as ECG had been unable to clear them. But after I took office and visited the harbour, I was presented with a different figure—2,500 containers, which had accrued a GHS 1,500,000,000 demurrage cost.”

He explained that this discrepancy led to the formation of an investigative committee, which confirmed that over 1,000 containers, including those containing cables and other equipment, were missing.

“The committee’s findings, which were submitted to me, verified that more than 1,300 containers were indeed missing, contrary to the claims made by the previous administration,” Jinapor said.

In light of this, he vowed to launch a criminal investigation, ensuring that those responsible would be held accountable and prosecuted.

“The government is committed to ensuring that such irregularities are not overlooked and will take appropriate action,” he added.
