A rainstorm catastrophe in Damongo, Savannah Region, has caused significant distress to many households, with one individual reportedly fainting during the event.

The affected person, a middle-aged woman with hearing loss, was collecting rainwater when she was struck by an object. She was immediately transported to the Saint Anne Catholic Hospital in Damongo, located in the West Gonja District, for medical care.

The storm, which lasted less than an hour, wreaked substantial havoc, including the destruction of the home of Baani Abudu Nelson, the former Member of Parliament for the Daboya Constituency. His four-bedroom self-contained house was torn apart, damaging personal belongings such as grains, refrigerators, televisions, beds, and essential documents.

Family members disclosed that the former MP was not present when the storm occurred.

“We have lost everything essential to us because the MP isn’t here, and our home is gone. I was here with my sister around 4 p.m. when the rain began. Shortly after, it turned into a storm and blew off our roof,” said Adam Kipo.

His sister, Abubakari Sadia, also voiced her frustration, stating, “Our food and everything are gone. The NADMO officials came and left, but we have no idea where to sleep tonight.” The storm, which hit around 4 p.m. on Monday, March 2025, caused widespread destruction throughout the town. Adam Bavug, the West Gonja Municipal NADMO officer, confirmed that 16 people from several households were affected.

Mr. Bavug further stated that five communities—Attributu, Alhassan-kura, Yagbon-kura, Zongo, and Abinga-kura—experienced considerable damage.

The West Gonja Municipal Assembly office also suffered damage, with power lines cut and part of the roof torn off.

Myjoyonline’s investigation revealed the extent of the devastation, reporting that this was the second rainstorm disaster in the region in just a month. Several personal possessions, including cars parked outside, were damaged, with broken windscreens among the reported losses.

At the time of this report, NADMO officials indicated that the assessment of the damage would continue the following day.
