Nunoo Mensah Bows Out of GOC Presidency Race

- Richard Akpokavi has declared his candidacy for president
Ben Nunoo Mensah, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has announced that he will not seek re-election in next month’s GOC elections.
At 61, the businessman has completed two terms in office, having first been elected in 2017. During his tenure, he oversaw Ghana’s participation in both the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games.
In a statement, Nunoo Mensah explained that he has chosen to move on to other pursuits.
“While it would have been an honor to continue serving my nation and the sports community, I feel a greater calling to contribute to humanity in a different and equally rewarding way. As such, I have decided not to contest in the upcoming GOC elections,” he said.
He acknowledged that his decision might disappoint those who have encouraged him to run for another four-year term, particularly many individuals and federations.
“I sincerely appreciate their support and trust in my leadership. However, I believe there comes a time when one must step aside, and for me, that time is now,” he added.
The GOC elections are set for April 26, with Richard Akpokavi, the committee’s former General Secretary, already announcing his candidacy for the presidency.
