Kofi Bentil Challenges Court’s Ruling on Security Head Removals

Story Highlights
  • Kofi Bentil disagrees with ruling on allowing the President to remove IGP
  • IMANI Ghana seeks to block replacements until a final decision
  • Court ruling suggests future impact on actions

Kofi Bentil, the Vice President of IMANI Africa, has voiced his disagreement with the Supreme Court’s ruling on an application aimed at preventing President John Dramani Mahama from removing former Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare and other heads of security agencies.

The five-member panel ruled that the application for an interlocutory injunction did not stop the President from carrying out his administrative and public duties.

The application, filed by IMANI Ghana and security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning, sought to block the President from making any changes within the security services until a final decision on the matter was reached.

However, Kofi Bentil expressed opposition to the court’s ruling, explaining, “I was urging the court that even though the action has taken place, in our legal view, it is void or voidable. I was trying to convince the court to take that step to send a message to everyone.”

He also pointed out that the court’s decision implies that the anticipated ruling on May 7 will have a future impact, rather than one with immediate effects.
