Ken Thompson’s Call for a Shift in Ghana’s Employment Mindset

Story Highlights
  • Ken Thompson urges Ghanaians to recognize that governments don’t create jobs directly
  • He encourages young people to explore opportunities beyond government jobs
  • He points out the lack of basic resources in some public institutions

Ken Thompson, the former CEO of Dalex Finance, has called on Ghanaians to rethink their views on job creation, emphasizing that governments do not directly create jobs.

During a discussion on the country’s economic issues, Thompson highlighted the importance of changing mindsets, especially among the youth.

“We need to understand that governments do not create jobs. No government anywhere creates jobs,” he stated.

In an interview on Channel One TV, he encouraged citizens to seek alternative employment options instead of relying on government positions.

Thompson expressed concern about the career goals of many young people, noting that many aspire to work at places like the Bank of Ghana, which he believes points to deeper systemic problems.

“What saddens me is that many young people, when asked where they want to work, say, ‘I want to work at the Bank of Ghana.’ That’s a sign of a bigger issue in Ghana,” he said. He also mentioned the lack of resources in some public institutions, adding, “Some of these places don’t even have desks for staff.”

While recognizing the challenges faced by the youth, Thompson emphasized that they are not to blame for the current economic struggles.

“It’s not the young people’s fault. Ghana is really in a tough spot,” he concluded.
