British actor and filmmaker Idris Elba has returned to Ghana, where he was honored as a son of Ga land by King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.
Elba’s homecoming on March 25, 2025, was marked with a grand celebration at the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra, recognizing his contributions to the African diaspora and his commitment to Ghana’s creative industry development.
He was warmly welcomed by Justice Naa Yaale, the Chief of Staff to the Ga Mantse and daughter of the late Ako Adjei, one of Ghana’s Big Six independence leaders, emphasizing the event’s historical and cultural importance.
The palace grounds were filled with traditional drumming, dancing, and a lively display of Ga heritage. In his speech, Elba reiterated his dedication to revitalizing Africa’s film industry.
“One of my goals is to bring the industry back to Africa,” he shared. “We’ve acquired 22 acres next to Osu Castle for a world-class studio and school to serve the Accra community.”
The announcement was met with enthusiasm as Elba elaborated on his plans to create a top-tier film studio, aimed at providing training and job opportunities for young Ghanaian creatives, positioning the country as a center for African cinema. King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II praised Elba’s initiative, pledging his full support and emphasizing its potential to positively impact the country’s youth.
“Our youth lack direction, and we need tools like this,” the Ga Mantse remarked. “Creating a studio and partnering with us is the way forward. We will support this completely so that the creative arts, especially Ga content, can progress.”
The ceremony drew notable figures from Ghana’s entertainment industry, including actors George Nii Armah, Chris Attoh, Kalsoume Sinare, and Adjetey Anang, as well as dignitaries who expressed excitement for the proposed film hub.
Elba’s visit marks a key milestone in Ghana’s goal to become a major player in global film production. With support from the Ga Mantse and industry leaders, the proposed studio is set to reshape Ghana’s creative landscape, fostering innovation, collaboration, and promoting authentic African storytelling.
