Jordan Ayew, captain of the Black Stars, has shared that the late Christian Atsu was the best player he ever played alongside during his career.
Atsu tragically passed away in 2023 after being found beneath the rubble of a building following a devastating earthquake in Turkey, where he had been playing professional football.
In an interview with Joysports’ Daniel Koranteng, Ayew was asked to name the best player he had ever played with at the national team level. Without hesitation, Ayew named Atsu.
“The best player I’ve ever played with, unfortunately, is no longer with us, and that’s Christian [Atsu]. I’ve played alongside Muntari and Essien,” he said with a somber smile.
“Asamoah [Gyan] and Andre [Ayew] are also up there, but I’ll go with Atsu. He didn’t get enough recognition for how talented he was on the field.”
Jordan Ayew recently led the Black Stars to two impressive wins in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, securing a 5-0 victory against Chad and a 3-0 win over Madagascar.
The captain was instrumental in Ghana’s success, contributing five goals—scoring once and assisting four times.
Currently, Ghana leads Group I with 15 points, holding a three-point advantage over second-placed Comoros, while Madagascar, Mali, the Central African Republic, and Chad sit further behind.
