Trump to Host Chiefs at White House

Story Highlights
  • Trump to host Chiefs for 2020 Super Bowl win
  • Eagles accept White House visit for Super Bowl LV
  • Trump withdrew 2018 Eagles invite over protest controversy

President Donald Trump announced that he plans to host the Kansas City Chiefs at the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl LIV victory from February 2020, which was overshadowed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers, but the traditional White House visit was canceled due to the global outbreak. Now, five years later, Trump said the team will finally have the opportunity to take pictures at the White House.

“I look forward to hosting the (Philadelphia) Eagles (for winning Super Bowl LV), and then after that, we’re going to have the Kansas City Chiefs, because they missed their chance due to Covid,” Trump said in an interview with Clay Travis, the founder of Outkick, while aboard Air Force One. He did not specify when the visit would take place.

CNN has reached out to the Chiefs to confirm if they have received an official invitation.

If the Chiefs do visit this year, they will join the Eagles, who recently accepted their invitation to visit after winning Super Bowl LV. Philadelphia defeated the Chiefs 40-22 in this year’s Super Bowl. Despite speculation on social media that the team might decline, the Eagles officially announced they would visit the White House on April 28.

This marks a contrast to 2018 when the Eagles chose not to attend their victory celebration with Trump. That year, the president criticized the team, falsely accusing players of disrespecting the National Anthem and withdrawing the invitation. Trump reflected on the 2018 situation, noting that while some Eagles players, coaches, and the general manager wanted to attend, the invitation was ultimately rescinded due to the controversy. “Some of the players wanted to come. And I just said, forget it,” Trump recalled, also referencing the 2017 NBA champion Golden State Warriors, who declined a White House invitation as well.

Trump added, “They said, ‘Well, we’ll think about it.’ I said, ‘You don’t have to think; you’re uninvited.’”
