Otto Addo, head coach of Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team, the Black Stars, has confirmed that Benjamin Asare is currently the team’s starting goalkeeper. He made this remark during his post-match press conference after Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar in Morocco. The match, which was technically Madagascar’s home game, was played in Morocco due to the African Football Confederation (CAF) not approving Madagascar’s venue.
Asare, a goalkeeper for Accra Hearts of Oak, received his first call-up to the Black Stars for the recent international window. In a surprising move, he was named as the starting goalkeeper in Ghana’s 5-0 win over Chad and continued in the same role for the Madagascar game. He appears to have secured the position, at least for now.
“The next game is in June. For now, he is number one. He did well in training. We have a good situation where the goalkeepers are pushing each other. I’m really grateful for the way [Lawrence] Ati Zigi and [Joseph] Wollacott also performed this week,” Addo said. He added, “The way they pushed Benjamin and supported him was great—big props to them for helping him. This shows good teamwork, and Benjamin truly deserved it.”
Asare is expected to feature as the goalkeeper for Hearts of Oak in their upcoming match against Medeama on Sunday, April 6, at the University of Ghana Stadium in the Ghana Premier League.
