Debate Over Attorney General’s Role in Investigations and Raids

  • Concerns were raised about the lack of warrant during the raid

The Minority in Parliament has accused the Attorney General of misusing his authority by ordering raids, making arrests, and investigating former government officials.

The caucus claims that the Attorney General’s primary role is to offer legal guidance to investigative bodies and assist the courts in administering justice, and that his current actions contradict this duty.

During a press briefing on Monday, March 24, Second Deputy Minority Whip Jerry Ahmed Shaib urged the Attorney General to immediately cease these actions.

“The Attorney General is supposed to support the court in delivering justice when investigators present their case and evidence. The current approach of the new Attorney General undermines this function. He is acting as if he has already conducted his own investigation, decided on a suspect’s guilt, and is attempting to impose his opinions on the court.

“This practice erodes the role of the Attorney General and the justice system. Those who respect the rule of law should demand that the Attorney General stop these actions immediately,” Shaib stated.

The caucus also mentioned that the National Security Coordinator had apologized to former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, acknowledging that the raid on his residence was unlawful.

“If there was a valid court warrant, why wasn’t it shown to Dr. Addison before or during the raid? Why was force used to overpower his private security? Why was the CCTV camera removed? Transparency is essential for lawful enforcement.

“The failure to follow proper procedures raises concerns about the legality and motives of the raid. No amount of legal or PR explanations can change the fact that Dr. Addison’s home was raided under questionable circumstances.

“If their actions were truly legal, why did the National Security Coordinator apologize to Dr. Addison over the phone via Richard Jakpa? If there was no misconduct by the security officers, what exactly was the apology for?” he asked.
