An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties for each of two individuals accused of stealing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meters and receiving stolen property.
The court ordered the sureties to present valid national identity cards at the registry.
Francis Addey, also known as Kofi Kyei, a 35-year-old okada rider, and Amos Duah, a 39-year-old electrician, pleaded not guilty to the charges and are scheduled to appear in court again on April 22, 2025.
During the proceedings, Police Inspector Hagar Owusu-Henabah, led by Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah, informed the court that the complainant is the Monitoring Officer from ECG’s Amasaman Branch.
The prosecution explained that Addey, residing in Ablekuma, conspired with an electrician named Fred, who is still at large, to steal ECG prepaid meters.
In August 2024, Fred allegedly provided a stolen prepaid meter with PIN 000035737829, taken from a customer at Fise near Amasaman, to Duah through Addey. Duah then sold the meter to a witness, Kwaku Twum, at Amasaman for GH¢2,500.
ECG officials recovered the meter during routine checks, prompting the company to notify the police.
The investigation led to Duah’s arrest, and he implicated Addey and Fred as his suppliers. Duah cooperated with the authorities and persuaded Addey to deliver another stolen prepaid meter.
On February 11, 2025, Addey delivered two used prepaid meters with PINs P181032280 and P181032277 to Duah at his home in Amasaman Abease for sale.
However, Addey was arrested by police officers waiting nearby as he tried to escape. Two prepaid meters and two meter cards were seized as evidence.
The prosecution informed the court that efforts are ongoing to capture Fred and identify the customers whose ECG meters were stolen, with assistance from the ECG Customer Service Department.
Addey and Duah were subsequently charged and brought before the court.
