On Thursday, March 20, 2025, the Takoradi Forest District’s Rapid Response Team conducted an operation at the Subri Forest Reserve after receiving intelligence about illegal mining. The operation targeted miners using an excavator to extract minerals in Compartment 219 of the reserve. These unlawful activities had already led to the destruction of about 0.6 hectares of forest.
While many illegal miners fled upon noticing the approaching task force, the team managed to arrest one suspect and confiscate an excavator. The individual is currently in the custody of the Western Regional Police Command. Authorities continue to monitor and address illegal mining in the region to safeguard Ghana’s forest reserves.
