I was treated like a first-time MP after removal as Deputy Majority Leader – Adwoa Safo

- Adwoa Safo was frustrated after being moved to the backbench
- She questioned if her treatment was due to her gender
- NPP officials intervened to change her seat
Former Deputy Majority Leader, Adwoa Safo, has expressed her frustration over the treatment she received after losing her position in a parliamentary reshuffle.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, she revealed that she was relegated to the backbench, akin to a first-time Member of Parliament, which she felt contradicted the usual protocol of the House.
She explained that former parliamentary leaders are typically given seats directly behind the new leadership, but her case was different. Safo was perplexed by this treatment, especially since former leaders were generally shown respect and fairness. She questioned if her treatment was due to her gender.
“There’s a rule and tradition, almost a custom, in place. Look at where Muntaka and Haruna sit. When I was removed, I was thrown to the backbench as if I were a new MP,” she said.
She also pointed out that everyone distanced themselves from the decision, despite the Majority Whip being responsible for seating arrangements. “How could the Majority Whip not know I was improperly allocated a seat?” she asked.
It was only after the intervention of NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and Deputy Majority Leader Habib Iddrisu that her seating position was adjusted.
