The Government, through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining the recently introduced free dialysis program as part of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Benefit Package. This initiative aims to provide ongoing support to renal patients enrolled in the Scheme.

Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, Deputy Chief Executive of Operations at NHIA, shared this commitment with beneficiaries during his address at the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s 2024 Annual Performance Review Meeting.

The event, themed “Transforming Service Delivery through Professional Excellence and Ethical Practice,” brought together key NHIA officials, including Dr. Anthony Gingong, Director of Special Initiatives and Liaison to the Ministry of Health, and Dr. Gustav Cruickshank, Director of Financial Accounting.

Dr. Djokoto’s presence was part of the NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe’s first working visit to the Northern and Upper East Regions. He emphasized the NHIA’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable and progressive healthcare environment under the NHIS.

“With this initiative, I am confident that there will be no disruption in services provided by accredited facilities,” Dr. Djokoto assured.

Acknowledging the vital role of healthcare providers, Dr. Djokoto reiterated the government’s ongoing support and stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the NHIA and teaching hospitals to advance the free primary healthcare agenda.

He also highlighted the launch of the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (Mahama Cares), which aims to take a comprehensive approach to addressing chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and dialysis. He emphasized that a forward-thinking policy is needed to alleviate the financial burden on individuals suffering from these conditions.

Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of Tamale Teaching Hospital, expressed gratitude for the NHIA’s timely reimbursement to accredited healthcare facilities for services rendered to NHIS members. He stressed the importance of continuing the dialysis program to ensure sustained support for patients.

On behalf of the Health Minister, Dr. Hafez Adams, Acting Director for Technical Coordination at the Ministry of Health, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare for all Ghanaians.
