Cocoa farmers have been urged to focus on their children’s education and explore other sources of income to support their families.
Lewis Dwumah, a community development leader at the Beyond Beans Foundation, made this statement during the launch of the Numereso Cocoa Farmers Susu Association in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region. He pointed out that cocoa farmers often struggle financially during the off-season, highlighting the importance of a dependable support system.
To tackle these issues, the foundation has introduced the Accelerator Programme, aimed at providing financial assistance and ensuring long-term sustainability. This initiative seeks to help fund the education of at least six children of cocoa farmers, support the planting of shade trees, assist with farm pruning, and create a susu (savings) scheme to reduce poverty among farmers. Several beneficiaries have described the susu program as a significant help, particularly in easing the financial strain of their children’s healthcare and education.
