Police Arrest Suspect in Ahmed Suale’s Murder Case

Story Highlights
  • Daniel Owusu Koranteng was arrested for betraying Ahmed Suale
  • Phone records link the suspect to the murder
  • A senior officer tries to interfere with the investigation

The Ghana Police Service has made an arrest in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale as part of their ongoing investigation into the case.

The suspect, who is a close friend of the deceased, is accused of betraying him by sharing his photographs with a prominent Ghanaian politician before his brutal murder.

Ahmed Suale was tragically killed near his family home in Madina on January 16, 2019, by unknown assailants, shortly after collaborating with the BBC on an investigative report. The two had previously worked together at Tiger Eye Private Investigations until the suspect was dismissed from the organization.

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, reportedly disguised himself and fled the country after police gathered information linking him to the case.

Crucial details, including phone call records between the suspect and Suale days before his death, were obtained by the FBI in the United States. Additionally, Suale’s phones were sent to the U.S. as part of the investigation.

A source close to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) revealed to Myjoyonline.com that the suspect had frequently visited Suale at his residence in Madina. As police closed in on him, Amakye fled to the U.S. but reportedly sneaked back into Ghana last week, where he was arrested at a hair salon in Amasaman-Adease.

His arrest has sparked some tension within the police force, as a senior officer is reportedly attempting to interfere with the investigation, advocating for the suspect to be granted police enquiry bail rather than being presented in court. This has created an uneasy atmosphere at police headquarters.

Suale’s death came after he and his Tiger Eye PI team exposed major corruption within African football, focusing heavily on the situation in Ghana.
