KNUST Students Safety is Paramount – Asantehene

The Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has emphasized that the safety and security of students are his top priorities.

The Asantehene expressed his satisfaction with the university’s involvement in the upcoming African Universities Safety and Security Training, viewing it as a positive move.

He stated, “The conference is a step in the right direction, especially in light of recent events on campus. The safety of students is of utmost importance to me. I seek peace on campus… As the university grows, so do criminal activities, and we must implement strong measures to counter them,” he shared with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson.

The Vice-Chancellor visited the Palace to inform His Majesty about the university’s invitation to attend the security and safety conference. She mentioned that she would be leading a delegation to participate in the training next week, which will be a “training for trainers.” Upon returning, they plan to pass on their new knowledge by training others.

Prof. Dickson reassured Otumfuo that the university was continuously improving its security measures to safeguard students. She highlighted the expansion of the campus’s CCTV coverage as part of these efforts.

The Vice-Chancellor also briefed Otumfuo about the postponement of the Special Congregation that had been scheduled for March. She explained that the event had to be rescheduled due to the lack of a University Council after the previous one was dissolved by the government.

“We had submitted the University’s activity schedule to the Palace at the start of the year, which included the Special Congregation date. Although we have officially communicated the postponement, we felt it was important to personally inform His Majesty,” she said.

Prof. Dickson was accompanied by Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Asamoah, during their visit to the Manhyia Palace on March 14, 2025.
