The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has urged the public to report any driver or station charging new fares after rumours of a potential fare increase spread.

The union made it clear that no official fare hike has been approved and that the current fare structure remains in place.

In an interview with Adom News, Samuel Amoah, GPRTU’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, emphasized that the union has not authorized any increase.

“We want to clarify that the union has not approved any increase in fares, and the public should not be misled by such rumours. Any station or driver found charging higher fares is going against the current rates, and we urge passengers to report these cases immediately,” he said.

Amoah also responded to the Alliance of Drivers for Ghana, which had announced a 20% fare increase.

He called on the group to retract its statement, noting that no such hike had been approved by GPRTU.

“We have asked the Alliance of Drivers for Ghana to delay the fare increase. We have not made any decision about an increase yet, and we urge all drivers to continue charging the existing fare until further notice,” he stated.

He added that the GPRTU is closely monitoring factors such as fuel prices and spare parts costs to decide if a fare increase will be necessary.

Amoah assured the public that the union would make an official announcement if a fare adjustment is needed.

“We are focused on making decisions that serve the best interests of both passengers and drivers. For now, we encourage the public to report any instances where drivers or stations are charging new fares, and we will take action accordingly,” he concluded.
