Asantehene to Host Heal KATH Fundraiser

Story Highlights
  • Otumfuo will host a fundraiser for KATH on April 21, 2025
  • Adu Boakye raised concerns about insufficient community involvement
  • Otumfuo called for collective action to finish the project

The occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will be hosting an event to raise funds for the continued renovation of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

After the first phase of the project was completed, Otumfuo instructed the committee to set a date for a fundraising event to gather the necessary funds for its completion. In response, the Heal KATH Committee proposed April 21, Easter Monday, during a courtesy visit to the King on March 14, 2025.

Otumfuo accepted the proposed date and tasked his office with assisting the committee in inviting relevant groups to the event.

During the visit, the committee’s Chairman, Sammy Adu Boakye, briefed Otumfuo about the project’s lack of sufficient support since its launch in November 2023. He suggested that stricter measures be considered, as the project has mainly been supported by a small group of influential individuals.

“We have not been able to get households to contribute as Otumfuo initially requested. The responsibility has fallen on only a few people, with churches, businesses, and even chiefs not participating,” he said. He noted that contributions from these groups alone would not be enough to push the project toward completion.

The delegation, led by KATH’s Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, also presented financial and structural updates on the project to the Manhyia Palace.

Before the presentation, the CEO provided an update on the progress of the work.

“We’ve completed the first phase, and Otumfuo has inspected the progress. This phase includes re-roofing the entire complex and renovating the interiors of Blocks A3, A4, and A5. We are grateful to Otumfuo for entrusting us with such a significant and honorable project.”

Otumfuo expressed disappointment over the low level of support for the initiative.

“I am saddened by this situation. We want quality healthcare, but we are not willing to contribute. People are praising me after seeing online pictures of the renovated sections, but they shouldn’t. What have I done? We all need to join forces to complete this work. None of us knows when we will need the services of this facility. We must do everything we can to finish what we’ve started.”

The Golden Stool occupant also acknowledged the Committee’s dedication and selfless efforts.

“Your commitment is commendable, and we will do everything possible to secure the funds needed to complete the project,” he added.

The delegation included Ing. Kwadwo Darko, Kwame Frimpong, and Mawusi Mary.
