Stop Sexual Harassment at McDonald’s UK

Story Highlights
  • McDonald's promised to keep the workplace safe and said their plan is working
  • The EHRC could take action against any branch that doesn't follow the rules
  • The EHRC reminded all 1,400 branches about their legal duties

All McDonald’s locations in the UK have been warned that legal action could be taken if they don’t take steps to protect employees from sexual abuse.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has written to all 1,400 branches, reminding them of their legal obligations or risk facing enforcement actions. This comes after a BBC investigation revealed troubling reports of sexual harassment and assault within the company.

In January, workers revealed they were still facing harassment, even after the CEO’s promise to improve workplace behavior. McDonald’s assured that it is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all staff and said its plan to address these issues is working.

The EHRC’s letter stressed that all businesses in the UK, regardless of size, must follow the Equality Act, emphasizing that McDonald’s franchises must take effective steps to prevent harassment, including risk assessments, safeguarding younger workers, and properly handling complaints. Any franchise failing to comply may face legal consequences.

The EHRC has enforcement powers, including the ability to investigate or take legal action, leading to fines. Liam Byrne, chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee, criticized the EHRC’s delay in addressing the issue despite knowing about the harassment for years. He urged them to take stronger action and reassure the public that the problem is being tackled effectively.

McDonald’s has been under investigation since 2021, with several workers, some as young as 16, coming forward with claims of sexual harassment and abuse. The company has apologized, introduced new measures, and dismissed employees over harassment allegations. However, many employees still report ongoing issues. McDonald’s said it is working with franchisees to ensure a safer working environment through initiatives like enhanced training and new digital reporting tools.
