Kofi Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, believes that Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside other recent sporting setbacks, underscores the need for a major overhaul of the country’s sports sector.
Ghana’s sports scene has reached a new low, with the country missing out on the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and failing to make a significant impact at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
This disappointment follows a series of early exits from the group stage in previous continental tournaments. Additionally, for the first time in years, Ghana did not have a boxer at the Olympics, as none of them secured qualification despite participating in multiple qualifiers.
In his opening remarks at the 2025 JoySports National Sports Dialogue, Kofi Adams stressed the necessity for change within the sector.
“Our recent sporting outcomes underscore the urgent need for this reset,” the Minister remarked. “Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, coupled with our inability to send a single boxer to the Paris 2024 Olympics, should be viewed not only as disappointments but also as a clear indication that our development system requires immediate attention.”
The JoySports Dialogue featured key speakers, including Tom Vernon, founder of Right to Dream, international sports consultant Magnus Rex Danquah, and former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe.
