Streetlights won’t be installed on roads under construction – Linda Ocloo

- 70% of streetlights fixed in 50 days, excluding roads under construction
- Pepair teams are working on lights in key areas
- Ocloo warns thieves will be arrested
Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has assured the public that at least 70% of streetlights in the region will be repaired within the next 50 days.
However, she clarified that no streetlights will be installed on roads that are currently under construction until the works are completed.
During an appearance on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Ocloo explained that although the government is committed to enhancing street lighting, vandalism continues to be a significant challenge. “We are facing issues with people damaging even newly installed streetlights, but we are working diligently to ensure that 70% of the lights are repaired within the given timeframe. If I can’t fix all of them, at least we will make substantial progress,” she said.
She mentioned that repair teams are actively working on streetlights in several locations, including around the Jubilee House, Okponglo, Adenta, and Aburi Road. Additionally, work is ongoing at Burma Camp and along the Kasoa Road.
“We have teams on the ground and are fixing streetlights in many areas. Just two days ago, I met with district coordinators to discuss this, and we’ve also made streetlight donations to accelerate the process,” she revealed.
The minister also issued a stern warning against theft and vandalism, saying, “Anyone caught stealing or destroying streetlights will be arrested and dealt with accordingly.”
To keep the public updated, Ocloo announced that the ministry will soon hold a press briefing to provide information on the progress made and the areas where streetlights have been repaired.
As the deadline approaches, there are concerns about whether the initiative can be fully realized, especially since many parts of the capital remain poorly lit at night. Despite this, Madam Ocloo remains confident that the target will be met.
