Foreign competition in Ghana’s construction industry

Story Highlights

  • Improving local skills and finding ways to expand internationally

The growing number of foreign competitors in Ghana’s construction industry has raised concerns among local stakeholders, who worry that local businesses could be overshadowed.

This has led to calls for stronger enforcement of government regulations to protect local firms.

According to Section 5(1) of the Architects Act 1969 (NLCD 357), the Council is responsible for maintaining high standards in the architecture profession and protecting the industry’s integrity.

At the Ghana Institution of Surveyors’ Annual General Meeting in Accra, Charles Amissah Koomson, Managing Architect at Multi-Build Consult Limited, stressed the importance of protecting local businesses. “While the influx of foreign professionals is beyond our control and introduces healthy competition, we must ensure our regulations are tighter to verify that foreign professionals are qualified to practice here,” Koomson said. He also highlighted the need to boost the skills of local professionals and explore opportunities to expand their expertise to other markets.
