Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister for Roads and Highways, has assured the public that the government is actively addressing the financial and logistical challenges that have delayed the completion of the Suame Interchange in Kumasi, along with other essential infrastructure projects.

The Suame Interchange has encountered significant setbacks due to funding shortages, challenges with relocating pipelines owned by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), and unresolved compensation payments to individuals affected by the project.

Contractors are currently working on phase two of the project, which involves constructing three overpasses and expanding a 3.1-kilometre stretch of road. Additionally, work on another 15 kilometres of local roads is nearing completion. The three overpasses at Anomangye, Suame New Road, and Abusuakruwa are expected to be finished within the next two months.

However, phase one, which includes building the main four-tier Suame Interchange, is only 13% complete. One of the major hurdles remains the relocation of GWCL pipelines, which is vital for the continuation of the interchange’s construction.

James Amoo-Gottfried, the Director of the Department of Urban Roads, addressed these ongoing issues during a site visit, emphasizing that although some piling work has been completed, discussions with GWCL are still underway to overcome the technical challenges. “We are hopeful to resolve this and reopen the site as soon as possible,” he said.

Minister Agbodza reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring the project moves forward smoothly. He acknowledged that although the reallocated funds may not cover all phases, considerable progress has been made, with phase two nearly complete, and phase one remaining a key focus.

“We are thankful to the contractors for the progress made. While the full bridge is not yet finished, President Mahama is determined to see vital projects like this one completed,” Agbodza added. He further assured the public that he would update the president on the current situation and work to secure the necessary resources to complete the project.
