Government Will Keep Ownership Of ECG or NEDCo

- Government is not selling ECG or NEDCo
- The government aims to improve the energy sector for better electricity service
- ECG and NEDCo will stay under government control.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has rejected claims that the government plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
Speaking to the press on March 7 at Jubilee House after President John Dramani Mahama’s second cabinet meeting, Jinapor clarified that no decision has been made to privatize these state-owned companies.
He explained that the government is only considering a partnership to improve revenue collection in the sector, which has been a major challenge. “Let me be clear: the government has not decided to sell ECG or NEDCo. We are exploring a partnership to enhance the efficiency of revenue collection,” he said. The goal, he added, is to ensure financial sustainability while keeping these power distributors under state ownership.
The Minister emphasized that both ECG and NEDCo remain essential to Ghana’s energy sector, and any decisions about their operations will prioritize national interests. “ECG and NEDCo are public assets, and any actions we take will be to improve their efficiency, not privatize them,” he assured.
Mr. Jinapor urged the public to ignore false information about the alleged sale of these companies and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the energy sector to provide reliable and affordable electricity for all Ghanaians.
