A 22-year-old welder has been sentenced to 18 years in prison with hard labor by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District for committing a robbery at Asaase Bokankye, near Akropong.

The case, overseen by Gloria Mensha Bonsu, saw Williams Amoateng plead guilty and be convicted based on his admission.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Evans Baaba Ayimbisah told the court that the victim, Blessing Owusu, a tricycle operator from Atwima Agogo, was robbed by Amoateng and his partner, Jolley, who is still on the run. On February 25, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Owusu was operating his tricycle (registration number M-2023-AS 2221) when Amoateng and Jolley hired him to take them to Asaase Bokankye.

While en route, Amoateng instructed Owusu to stop, and both suspects exited the tricycle. They then threatened Owusu with a stick and a stone, demanding his tricycle, worth GH₵46,000, along with his day’s earnings of GH₵750. The pair took the vehicle and cash and fled.

On February 27, 2025, Owusu spotted Amoateng in Asaase Bokankye and raised an alarm. With the assistance of onlookers, Amoateng was captured and handed over to the Pokukrom Police.

During interrogation, Amoateng admitted to the crime in his caution statement, revealing that he had sold the stolen tricycle at Kumasi-Alabar. However, when police accompanied him to the location, he was unable to identify the buyer.

After further investigations, Amoateng was charged with robbery and sentenced accordingly.
