  • Recent bus crash highlights need for improved road infrastructure
  • Residents call for dual lanes, streetlights, and safety measures

Residents of Kintampo in the Bono East Region are urging the government to take immediate action in addressing the increasing number of road accidents in the municipality. Their concerns come in the wake of a recent incident in which a bus veered off the road and crashed into a ditch, adding to the growing list of fatal crashes in the area.

According to local residents, Kintampo’s strategic location as the geographical center of Ghana should have attracted significant infrastructural development, particularly improved road networks. However, they are disheartened by the lack of basic infrastructure, such as dual or triple carriageways, which they believe could help reduce accidents.

Many residents shared their experiences of frequent accidents involving long-distance buses and cargo trucks, citing narrow roads, poor visibility, and the absence of barriers as contributing factors. They noted that such accidents happen almost every two months, often leading to loss of life and severe injuries.

The residents also highlighted that most accidents occur at night, due to poor lighting and sharp curves along the roads.

In response, the community is calling on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority to take urgent steps to expand the roads in Kintampo, introduce dual or triple lanes, and implement road safety measures, including streetlights, road signs, and guardrails.

The residents believe that these proactive measures will not only help reduce accidents but also improve transportation safety for both travelers and residents.
