President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, assuring Ghanaians that the policy will not be cancelled.
In his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, Mahama emphasized that his government will instead focus on improving the program, addressing its implementation challenges, and enhancing its overall quality.
“Mr Speaker, let me repeat it once again. I, John Dramani Mahama, will not cancel the Free SHS Program. I will rather make it better from the implementation problems that it has been facing,” he stated.
As part of efforts to revamp the education system, Mahama announced that the double-track system will be scrapped, with a focus on infrastructural development to ensure a more effective and efficient education system.
The President underscored his commitment to strengthening the Free SHS program by tackling its shortcomings, implementing reforms, and improving access, quality, and sustainability.
“Our focus is to improve learning conditions, provide adequate resources, and ensure that students receive the best education possible,” he stressed.
Mahama’s assurance has brought relief to many parents and guardians who were concerned about the potential cancellation of the policy, which would have posed a significant financial burden.
