“Black Stars Have Captains, But No Leaders” – Sam Johnson

  • Black Stars to shift focus to 2026 World Cup qualifiers after AFCON setback

Former Ghana defender Sam Johnson has expressed his concerns about the current Black Stars squad, claiming that the team lacks true leadership.

His comments come on the back of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Black Stars, four-time African champions, finished at the bottom of their qualifying group, securing only three points from six matches.

This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will miss out on the AFCON tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Morocco in December.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Johnson, who had notable stints with Hearts of Oak and Fenerbahçe, voiced his frustrations with the leadership structure within the team.

“The Black Stars have captains, but no leaders,” he said.

Despite the setback in the AFCON qualifiers, the Black Stars will now turn their attention to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Ghana is set to face Chad and Madagascar in crucial matches scheduled for March.
