Two Teenagers Arrested for Stealing Gold and GH¢41,000

Story Highlights
  • Two teenagers remanded over GH¢41,000 gold theft
  • Police suspect larger criminal syndicate involved
  • Suspects remanded in juvenile cells until March 5, 2025

The prosecutor in the case involving two teenagers accused of gold theft has informed the court that the police suspect a larger criminal syndicate, possibly with multiple accomplices, is behind the crime.

Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, the prosecutor, requested additional time to continue investigations into the matter. He explained that further time was needed to verify the true ages of the suspects and to investigate the extent of the criminal network involved.

The Assin Fosu District Court, where the two suspects appeared on Thursday, February 20, 2025, agreed to remand them in juvenile cells until their next appearance on March 5, 2025.

Alleged Gold Theft

The two teenagers were arrested for allegedly stealing gold and GH¢41,000 from a gold shop at Twifo Praso in the Twifo Ati Morkwa District of the Central Region. The suspects, who both claim to be 17 years old, were placed in juvenile detention by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, the presiding judge.

Chief Inspector Anyongo informed the court that the police are investigating the true ages of the suspects, as there are concerns that they may be older than they have stated. He explained that the girl had initially told police she was 15 but later revised her age to 17. Authorities also suspect the boy may be older than his claimed age.

Preliminary investigations, according to Chief Inspector Anyongo, suggest that the suspects had been planning the theft for some time, keeping a close watch on the gold shop’s activities before carrying out the crime.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigations

The two suspects were arrested on Sunday, February 16, 2025, by the Twifo Praso District Police Command, under the leadership of District Commander Superintendent Charles Addae Boateng.

The girl was apprehended at her hideout in Egyaa, near Anomabo, in the Mfantseman Municipality, while her accomplice, the boy, was arrested at a different location following a tip-off.

Reports indicate that CCTV footage captured the girl stealing from the gold shop, after which she allegedly distributed the stolen money among her accomplices, including her boyfriend.

The police have urged anyone with information related to the theft or the suspects to come forward and assist with the investigation. Authorities are continuing efforts to track down the remaining members of the suspected criminal network.
