“Public Sector Workers Will Receive Higher Salaries If Economy Recovers” – Mahama

  • 10% increase in base pay announced
  • Mahama appeals for financial discipline

President John Dramani Mahama has promised public sector workers higher salaries if the economy improves in the upcoming year. Speaking at the National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment on Thursday, the President highlighted the importance of patience and collective effort in the process of rebuilding the nation’s economy.

Following successful negotiations, the government recently announced a 10% increase in the base pay for public sector workers. During his address to labour unions, President Mahama acknowledged the challenges faced by workers but emphasized the need for financial discipline in navigating the current economic situation.

“Let’s temper our demands for this year. Once we recover from these challenges, we will set realistic targets to bring down inflation, which will lower the cost of living. We will focus on growing the economy to improve things. Once the economy expands, we will share the benefits accordingly,” the President stated.

He further urged the unions to reach an agreement on the matter, describing this year as a time for necessary adjustments. “I am simply appealing to you to reach an agreement on this matter so that we can use this year as a period of correction. After we have made the necessary adjustments, we will see how the economy progresses. Once it moves in the direction we all hope for, and if we have an Independent Emoluments Committee, and if you propose a 35% increase, I will support it, as it will affect my pay too,” he added.

While acknowledging that the demands of the workers are valid, the President stressed that the current economic conditions require sacrifices from all sectors, including the government. He cautioned against complacency and emphasized the potential consequences of inaction.

“We can behave like the ostrich and hide our heads in the sand and let the economy crash, but then what effect would it have on Ghanaian households and everybody?” President Mahama asked.
