The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on Wednesday, leaving a bystander injured.
According to a statement from the GRA, Customs officers had received intelligence regarding a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled into Ghana from Togo. In an attempt to intercept and impound the vehicle, the occupants of the car abandoned it and fled the scene.
In the process of trying to stop the fleeing suspects, the officers opened fire. However, a stray bullet struck an engineer from the South Tongu Assembly, identified as Alex, who was located a few meters from the checkpoint.
The GRA expressed its sympathy towards the victim, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders involved. The authority also confirmed that Alex was quickly transported to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and responding well.
In its statement, the GRA emphasized its dedication to taking the necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders.
