A fire outbreak at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) warehouse in Cape Coast on Wednesday caused significant damage, destroying electrical cables worth thousands of cedis. Approximately 60 drums of 2×25mm aluminium electrical cables were affected, though fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Fire officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze. It took nearly four hours for personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Central Region to bring the fire under control.
Quick Response by Firefighters
The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOIII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, confirmed that the fire service responded to a distress call at 4:28 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, reporting a fire at the ECG warehouse.
DOIII Hudu stated that the swift intervention of the GNFS prevented further destruction to the warehouse. “On arrival at the scene at 4:35 p.m., firefighters observed that the fire had engulfed the outdoor stockyard of the warehouse, where bundles of 2x25mm aluminium cables were stored,” he explained.
Firefighters from the regional headquarters immediately called for additional support from the Cape Coast Metropolitan Fire Station to help control the situation.
Preventing Further Damage
The quick and strategic actions of the firefighters were crucial in preventing the fire from spreading to the main warehouse and neighboring properties. After several hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was fully extinguished around 8:00 p.m.
The Central Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFOII Merinda Mary Attigah-Mensah, who was present at the scene, urged businesses and institutions to prioritize fire safety, especially during the dry season.
