“We Want Passport Administration to Operate 24 Hours a Day” – Ablakwa

- Ghana introduces 24-hour passport services
- Waiting time for passport applications to be reduced
- Passport fees may be reduced, says Minister Ablakwa
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced a significant overhaul of the country’s passport system, revealing plans to introduce 24-hour passport services as part of a broader reform agenda.
During a recent tour of the passport head office and regional office in Accra, Mr. Ablakwa explained that the initiative aims to alleviate the backlog of passport applications and enhance the efficiency of the process.
“You’ve also heard about our major reform. We want the passport administration in our country to operate 24 hours a day. This year, you need to be prepared as we will be running three shifts. We aim to reduce the waiting time for passport applications,” he stated.
As part of the reform, the Minister highlighted five action plans designed to revamp the passport office and improve the overall application process in Ghana. The new measures are intended to ensure that clear targets are met in an expedited manner.
Additionally, Mr. Ablakwa mentioned that there could be a reduction in the passport application fee, which is currently set at GH₵500.00 for a standard 32-page passport. He assured the public that any fee reduction would be equitable and would ensure that the wealthier subsidize the costs for those less fortunate.
The Minister, who also serves as the North Tongu Member of Parliament, reiterated his commitment to improving the welfare of passport office staff to support the smooth implementation of these changes.
