  • Security agencies on high alert to prevent violence escalation

Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, has expressed concerns about the potential spillover of the ongoing Bawku conflict into his region, following recent security incidents in Walewale that have been linked to the crisis.

The security incidents have raised alarms about the possibility of instability spreading beyond Bawku, intensifying fears of conflict reaching neighboring regions.

In an interview with journalists after a high-level stakeholder meeting, the Minister stressed the importance of proactive security measures to prevent any escalation of violence in the Savannah Region.

Be-Awuribe pointed out the region’s vulnerability due to its proximity to conflict-prone areas, which could allow individuals seeking to extend hostilities to infiltrate the area.

“The spillover of the Bawku chieftaincy issues is affecting the Savannah Region. If you pass through the Sandema area, you can reach Daboya. Because of the conflict, some traffic is diverted from the main route through the North East Region. If we don’t establish the necessary security structures, some individuals could bring the conflict into our area. This is something we are taking very seriously,” he explained.

He further added that Walewale, located within the region, has already experienced disturbances tied to the ongoing conflict in Bawku.

In response to the situation, the Minister reassured residents that security agencies are on high alert and are working in close collaboration with local authorities to ensure that the conflict does not escalate further into the Savannah Region.
