President John Dramani Mahama has praised Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu for reinstating Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in first and second-cycle institutions. Speaking at the National Education Consultative Forum in Ho, Volta Region, on Tuesday, February 18, Mahama welcomed the move, emphasizing its importance in school management.
“I’m happy that the Honourable Education Minister has already announced that PTAs can engage schools to ensure that the children at the schools are properly managed,” he said. “And so PTAs can start to do their work by engaging the schools to deepen management of the schools.”
The reinstatement of PTAs comes after the Ghana Education Service (GES) suspended PTA activities in 2019 under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
Strengthening School Leadership and Community Involvement
Mahama reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with parents, traditional authorities, and local communities to enhance student learning. He assured that school leaders would be empowered to perform their duties in line with national standards.
The former president also pledged to collaborate with stakeholders, including the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and teachers’ unions, to improve education policies and teacher support systems. Furthermore, he underscored the government’s commitment to prioritizing research-driven policies in decision-making.
Vision for Ghana’s Education System
Mahama outlined a vision for an education system that ensures equal opportunities for all students, values teachers, and fosters innovation.
“Let us envision an education system where every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to achieve their full potential,” he said. “Let us envision an education system where teachers are celebrated, supported, and empowered to inspire the next generation.”
He urged all stakeholders to work together to build an education system that aligns with national aspirations and equips Ghana’s youth for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
“The future of this country is in our hands. Let us seize this moment and work together to create a legacy of hope, opportunity, and transformation for future generations,” he said. “One resolution at a time, one transformation at a time, Ghana will win in developing this country’s young people for service.”
