The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has announced plans to stage a demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the withholding of 10,500 results from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Although the exams overall saw a high success rate, WAEC flagged multiple instances of malpractice, including allegations of photocopying answers, smuggling of mobile phones, and collusion among students in exam halls. Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the full extent of the malpractice.

However, NUGS has expressed strong criticism of WAEC’s handling of the situation, arguing that the decision to withhold the results has unjustly affected thousands of students who may have no involvement in the alleged misconduct.

The union has scheduled the protest for Tuesday, February 25, beginning at 9:00 am. The demonstration will commence at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, with participants expected to gather and march to express their grievances.

NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchway, confirmed that the Greater Accra Regional Police Command had been informed of the demonstration, ensuring proper coordination.

“This demonstration is a protest against what we see as an injustice and an abuse of discretionary power by WAEC,” portions of NUGS’ statement read.

The union has urged all affected students, as well as stakeholders, to join the protest in solidarity, calling for a fair and transparent resolution to the matter.
