Minority NPP Caucus Demands Increase in Cocoa Producer Price

Story Highlights
  • Minority Caucus demands cocoa price increase
  • World market price surges to $10,000 per ton
  • Government urged to honor 70% payment pledge to farmers

The Minority NPP Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to raise the producer price of cocoa, citing promises made before and after the 2024 elections.

The Minority argues that senior NDC figures, including Minister for Agriculture Eric Opoku and Minister for Finance Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, had previously accused the former government of underpricing cocoa, which they claimed shortchanged the nation’s cocoa farmers.

With the world market price of cocoa now reaching $10,000 per ton—significantly higher than before—the Caucus insists that cocoa farmers should receive two-thirds of this global price, as pledged during the election campaign. They argue that fulfilling this promise would encourage farmers, enhance production, and further strengthen Ghana’s position as the world’s second-largest cocoa producer.

Dr. Isaac Yaw Opoku, the MP for Offinso South, led the charge, urging the government to immediately fulfill its commitment and pay farmers 70% of the world market price.

The Minority also warned of growing tension in cocoa-growing regions and emphasized the need for swift government action to prevent further disappointment among farmers.
