  • Issue affects rural and underserved areas nationwide

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has revealed that approximately 5,000 schools across Ghana continue to operate under trees due to inadequate infrastructure.

The Tamale South MP made this statement during a public forum on education held in Accra.

“We have an infrastructure deficit of about 5,000 schools still under trees,” Iddrisu said, expressing concern over the widespread issue.

The Minister acknowledged the detrimental impact of this situation on the quality of academic activities, stressing the commitment of the Mahama-led administration to bridge the infrastructure gap.

“There will be massive investment in educational infrastructure, with the first phase being unveiled in the 2025 budget statement. We will work to close the gaps,” he assured.

The problem of schools operating under trees has persisted for years, particularly in rural and underserved regions of the country. Due to a lack of proper buildings, teaching and learning often occur in open spaces or in deteriorating structures, further exacerbating the challenges facing students and teachers alike.

The lack of sufficient school infrastructure has been attributed to limited access to formal educational facilities, inadequate funding, and the overall underdevelopment of educational resources in certain areas.
