  • Ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta removed from wanted list
  • He'll return to Ghana in May 2025 after medical procedure
  • OSP warns of re-listing if he fails to appear for interview

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially removed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from its list of wanted persons after his legal team confirmed he would return to Ghana in May 2025. This follows Ofori-Atta’s earlier declaration as a wanted person in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation into alleged financial misconduct during his tenure.

In a letter dated February 18, 2025, Ofori-Atta’s lawyers assured the OSP of his intention to cooperate with the investigation and provided a clear timeline for his return. “We respectfully indicate that our client, who is due for his return, cannot travel before six to eight weeks post-surgical intervention, as indicated in the hospital’s letter,” the legal team wrote.

The letter confirmed that Ofori-Atta’s scheduled surgery would take place between March 20 and 21, with a recovery period that would enable his return to Ghana between May 14 and 30, 2025. “Considering the scheduled surgery and the necessary recovery period, our client expects to be back in Ghana between May 14 and 30, 2025. We hope this timeline will guide your office in scheduling an in-person appearance,” the letter added.

The OSP had initially declared Ofori-Atta a fugitive on February 12, 2025, but has since acknowledged the proposed return date as reasonable. The office has agreed to reschedule his interview accordingly.

However, the OSP issued a warning that if Ofori-Atta fails to return to Ghana or attend the rescheduled interview, he will be re-listed as a wanted person and treated as a fugitive. “The Office of the Special Prosecutor remains committed to ensuring accountability,” the OSP statement read. “Should the former minister fail to return as indicated, all necessary legal measures will be taken to secure his appearance before the authorities.”
