Health Minister to Brief Parliament Today on Cholera and Meningitis Outbreaks

- Health Minister briefs Parliament on outbreaks
- Concerns raised over control measures
- Minister to reveal gov't intervention plans
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is scheduled to appear before Parliament today, Tuesday, February 18, to provide an update on the ongoing public health emergencies in Ghana. The update comes in response to concerns raised by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Efutu, regarding the recent outbreaks of cholera and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in various regions of the country.
Following Afenyo-Markin’s request, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor has formally summoned Minister Akandoh to brief the House on the current situation and the government’s efforts to control the spread of these diseases.
Afenyo-Markin, whose constituency is among the identified hotspots for the outbreaks, has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the existing measures in containing the spread of the diseases and protecting affected communities.
In preparation for his appearance before Parliament, Minister Akandoh has conducted field visits to assess the situation on the ground. He toured several regions, including Western, Greater Accra, and Central, to evaluate the cholera outbreak, and visited the Upper West Region to inspect the meningitis situation.
During his briefing, Minister Akandoh is expected to deliver a comprehensive report detailing the ongoing outbreaks, government interventions, and the measures in place to mitigate the impact on affected populations.
