A tragic bus crash in southwestern Bolivia has claimed the lives of more than 30 people, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on a treacherous mountain road in the Yocalla district, between the cities of Potosi and Oruro. Police believe the driver lost control of the vehicle, which plunged nearly 800 meters (2,625 feet) down the slope.

In addition to the fatalities, 14 others were injured, including four children. A local hospital official shared the news in a video, stating that some of the injured were in critical condition.

The crash occurred in an area known for its notoriously dangerous roads, particularly in mountainous regions. Police Colonel Victor Benavides explained that the incident may have been caused by excessive speed, with the driver reportedly “unable” to regain control of the bus.

“This is believed to be the most serious road accident in Bolivia so far this year,” Benavides told AFP.

The tragedy follows a similar accident just last month, in which 19 people lost their lives when another bus veered off the road near Potosi. Deadly accidents on Bolivia’s roads are not uncommon, with government data showing an average of 1,400 deaths annually in the country of approximately 12 million residents.

Officials and news outlets have confirmed that the majority of the injured are in critical condition. Local news station Unitel reported the grim details, highlighting the severity of the crash and the dangers of the country’s roadways.
