Four Farming Communities in Ashanti Region Struggle with Power Outages

Story Highlights
  • Four Ashanti Region communities face electricity shortage
  • Healthcare services impacted, internet access hindered
  • Electricity poles and wires stolen, communities appeal for government action

Residents of four farming communities in the Afigya Kwabre North District of the Ashanti Region are grappling with a persistent electricity supply issue, which is severely affecting their daily lives.

The communities of Amponsahkrom, Prabon, Hobesu, and Kofifofiekrom are at the center of this challenge, with many residents, particularly healthcare professionals, raising concerns about the lack of electricity.

Healthcare workers stationed at the CHPS compound in these communities are particularly distressed by the power outages. The absence of electricity is making it difficult for them to provide optimal care, especially during nighttime hours. The situation, they say, is directly impacting patient care and limiting their ability to deliver the necessary services.

Richard Amankwa, a health worker in the area, highlighted that internet access has also been a significant challenge due to the ongoing power shortages. This has hindered their ability to process important documents, such as those related to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He noted that the electricity issues only worsen the situation.

Local assembly member, Emmanuel Nomenyo Kwabena, confirmed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had installed power lines to connect the four communities to the national grid. However, he added that some unknown individuals have removed the electricity poles and wires, leaving the communities without power.

Kwabena called on the government and the Electricity Company of Ghana to work together to address the electricity supply problems in the area. He emphasized the importance of resolving the issue for the benefit of the communities, especially for healthcare services and overall living conditions.
