A tragic accident on the Walewale highway in the North East Region has claimed the lives of nine individuals and left 15 others with severe injuries on Thursday afternoon, February 13, 2025.
The crash occurred when a Sprinter vehicle traveling from Kumasi to Nalerigu collided with a stationary long truck near Walewale township. According to reports, the victims were rushed to the Walewale Government Hospital around 1:30 p.m., where the bodies of the deceased were deposited. The injured victims are also receiving treatment at the same facility.
A source at the hospital confirmed the incident, stating that the victims were promptly brought in after the crash.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Sprinter vehicle, traveling from Kumasi, collided with the long truck, which was parked on the shoulder of the highway facing Bolgatanga. The witnesses further mentioned that the driver of the Sprinter was speeding as he approached the Walewale township. Upon noticing the parked truck, the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the fatal collision.
The impact of the crash left the Sprinter vehicle severely mangled, trapping several passengers inside.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the crash.
