The occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reaffirmed his commitment to embracing all pro-Asante associations in the diaspora, stating that his doors are open to any group that seeks to unite and preserve Asante culture.

His Majesty made the remarks during a visit from Opemsuo Nananom, a New York-based group of Asantes founded and led by Attakora Amaniampong. The group, which was attending the Manhyia Palace as part of the Awukudae Festival on February 12, 2025, had previously separated from another Asante association in New York, a move that had led to disputes and eventually a lawsuit.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II became aware of the conflict a few years ago during a visit to the United States. He intervened to ensure the lawsuit filed by the original group was withdrawn.

During the meeting, the King emphasized that unity was of utmost importance to him. “Each Asante who lives in the diaspora paid for his or her trip and did not travel as part of a group. If this young man [Amaniampong] has decided to form an association separate from the existing one and has people willing to join, so be it. If others prefer a different association, allow them to operate as well,” he said.

The Asantehene made it clear that he would always welcome all groups, regardless of their affiliation. “This young man is the first to come with his members. If the other group also comes, I will receive them equally. This should not be a source of conflict. They are all serving the interests of Asanteman,” Otumfuo affirmed.

Otumfuo expressed his approval of Amaniampong’s initiative, encouraging him to continue his work of uniting Asantes in America. “Continue to mobilize the people… The fact that he has people supporting him is proof that he is indeed bringing them together. Keep it up. You all travelled as individuals, so uniting them is commendable.”

As part of the visit, Attakora Amaniampong made a generous donation of US$5,000 in support of the Heal KATH project. This initiative aims to raise funds for the renovation of the dilapidated old Gee Block of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

In addition, the founder of Opemsuo Nananom expressed a desire to host an Akwasidae Festival at Times Square in New York. This event would mirror the successful celebration held in London in August 2024. Amaniampong shared his excitement, stating, “This year, we are looking forward to celebrating Akwasidae at Times Square with him, just as he did in the UK last year.”
