Ghanaian musician Atongo Zimba has shared his views on the role of constructive criticism within the creative industry, urging individuals who lack creative talent to refrain from criticizing those in the field.
In an interview with JoyNews’ Becky, Zimba highlighted the importance of respect and understanding when engaging with creatives. He emphasized that the industry thrives on uniqueness and innovation, and those without a deep grasp of the creative process should avoid unwarranted criticism.
“I respect everyone in the industry who does things differently,” Zimba remarked. “Look at Sarkodie. When he started, people criticized him for being different. But look at how things turned out for him. Look at Stonebwoy; he’s doing something different and going far with it. So, if you cannot do it, don’t criticize.”
The veteran musician further noted that creativity is a unique gift, one that not everyone possesses. “Unless you have a deep understanding of the creative process, it’s challenging to provide meaningful feedback,” he added.
Hailing from northern Ghana, Zimba was introduced to music at a young age by his grandfather, who taught him to play the kologo, a traditional two-stringed lute. Since then, he has become a respected musician, singer, and griot, known for his distinct fusion of traditional and modern sounds.
