The statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, situated at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, was destroyed by unknown individuals in the early hours of January 13, 2025.

A police source confirmed that authorities were alerted to the incident and quickly responded to the scene. “By the time we got there, the damage had already been done,” the source stated.

The statue, which had been erected to honor the former president, was found toppled, with significant damage to its structure, including the head and knee area. The destruction occurred around 1:30 a.m. on the morning of January 13.

Originally unveiled on November 6, 2024, the statue had already undergone repairs in December 2024 after it suffered visible damage. One of the primary concerns raised by the public was a large hole in the back of the statue’s left leg, which sparked debate over whether the damage was a result of deliberate vandalism or structural flaws.

Eyewitnesses noted that the repairs to the statue were conducted on December 18, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., by two men and a woman. A police officer was also seen stationed at the site by 6:00 p.m. that day, providing security during the restoration process.

Despite the restoration efforts, the statue has continued to stir controversy within the community. Many residents have questioned the appropriateness and timing of its installation, especially given the pressing developmental needs in the area.
