“Market Is Slow This Christmas Because NPP Lost” – Kumasi Traders

The Christmas season is slowly gaining momentum in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, with many revelers eagerly anticipating the holidays. However, some traders in the city are lamenting low sales, attributing the slow market to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral loss.

In the aftermath of the December 7 polls, the city is experiencing a mixed atmosphere. The region, a stronghold of the NPP, had anticipated a victory to celebrate the season. “We are celebrating regardless of the outcome of the elections,” said Don One, a phone repairer at the PZ lane in the Central Business District (CBD).

Traders in the CBD argue that the NPP’s defeat has impacted sales, with those selling Christmas accessories like toys, hats, and fireworks recording dwindling profits. “Before the elections, the market was good. But now, you barely can break even. If the elections had gone in favor of the NPP, the market would have boomed,” said Joy, a trader at Adum.

Despite the slow economic activities, people are still finding ways to enjoy the season. “We must celebrate because God has been good. I will really enjoy this Christmas. We will be chewing chicken and visiting the mall,” said Adwubi, who was buying Christmas accessories for her wards.

The city’s decorations are also adding to the festive atmosphere. The airport roundabout, a popular spot for photos, has been decorated with lighting accessories. “I came here to take photos because the place is nicely decorated. I will be partying all through until December 28,” said Mubarak Yussif, who was spotted taking photos at the roundabout.
